Technical Information

Technical information on Arctagrostis latifolia (common name Alyeska polargrass) is listed in the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service Plants Profile data. This website can be accessed at http://plants.usda.gov. The profile for Arctagrostis latifolia can be found on the site. Arctagrostis latifolia is a perennial native grass found in the Arctic and sub-Arctic circumpolar regions. The wetland indicator status for Arctagrostis latifolia is FACW/Facultative wetland. It usually occurs in wetlands (estimated probability 67%-99%) but occasionally is found in non-wetlands.

The State of Alaska, Department of Transportation, Alaska Highway Drainage Manual, October 1, 2001, advocates the use of Arctagrostis latifolia into the seed mixture for erosion control projects.

The Technical Report No. 98-3 has compiled a streambank revegetation plant species selection list of grasses and sedges, and recommends utilizing Arctagrostis latifolia in streambank revegetation (Streambank Revegetation and Protection, A Guide for Alaska by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game and the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Technical Report No. 98-3, March 1998).

The Revegetation Guide for use in Construction-related Projects in Southcentral Alaska, July 1988, Municipality of Anchorage Department of Economic Development & Planning, Anchorage, Alaska, recommends including Arctagrostis latifolia in the seed mixture for riparian revegetation or reclamation in areas of high moisture content and/ or acidic soils.

The Division of Agriculture, Alaska Department of Natural Resources published an updated notice of Alaska Plant Releases. Plant cultivars developed by either the Alaska Plant Materials Center or the University of Alaska Agriculture & Forestry Experiment Station were listed:

  • " Arctagrostis latifolia (common name Alyeska polargrass) was developed by the University of Alaska Agriculture Experiment Station and released in 1976. This selection was developed for revegetation in western and interior Alaska. Arctagrostis latifolia is adapted to moist to moderately wet areas. Polargrass is a north-latitude species with a circumpolar distribution."

The book, Flora of Alaska and Neighboring Territories, A Manual of the Vascular Plants, 1968 by Eric Hulten, lists Arctragostis latifolia and plant characteristics on page 94. It notes that Arctragrostis latifolia is a circumpolar plant often found in wet meadows, along rivers and on tundra.
